2009 Report

Picture
The annual grant from SRSA helped to fund our administration and to host two open days to establish new clubs in KwaZulu Natal and Mpumalanga.  A special thanks to Doris Mashishi for her assistance from the SRSA office.

I want to thank the executive committee for their work during the year and a special thanks to Celeste Richards for helping us out as secretary after Brenda Suttie had to leave the position due to work pressure.  I have to make special mention of the hard work done by Shaun van Biljon to manage the financial side of the federation.  I appreciate the additional work Shaun does for us, as the grants we receive increase so do the work on the accounting side.  Thanks to Meriam Monama for helping with all the work in the office.

I want to briefly mention some of the events of the year.

August we submitted our annual financial applications to SRSA at the end of August.   SRSA gave us a grant of R 50 000 for the year 08/09. The grant was spent on administration and new club development.

We attended the World Speed Roller Skating championship in Gijon, Spain in September.  Thanks to NLDTF we could participate in the event with the biggest team we have ever had. It was wonderful to select a team with no without any regard of the financial implications involved.  The races were once again very fast.  The organization of the championship was very good and a record amount of 58 countries competed.

Our skaters did their best and skated many personal best times but still have a long way to go to reach the top.  Tshepo Modikwe, at his first worlds and Marcel Louw our most experienced skater both made the finals in long distance races.  It was good to see the South Africans in the finals but both final races proved too hard for them.   Brian Baloyi skated a very good 500m on the road and many coaches and managers made a special effort to compliment us on his good race, unfortunately he could not qualify for the next round.  Ubakeng Boikanyo and Marlon Avontuur both at their first worlds good times and skated to the best of their abilities.  Tumelo Moteme our only lady, once again improved on her performance.  The skaters still have to work very hard to improve their results at this level of competition but we are improving ant that is encouraging.

For the first time we could take a Senior and Junior team manager and a coach to assist the team.  Two members of our executive committee, Desiree Nel and Karel Avontuur, had the chance to see their first world championship and I think it changed their whole perspective of the sport.   Patrick Furter worked as a judge and Niki Stander passed her International Judges Examination.  They both did very well and I am sure they will be invited again to judge at World Championship.  I thank FIRS, CIC and the Real Spanish Federation for their assistance to us.

Shortly after our return from Spain in September we submitted our 2009 application to the NLDTF.

The 9th and 10th of October 2009 I attended the National Sports Indaba in Durban apart from the political issues with the Rugby Springbok the rest of the Indaba was very educational and informative.

In November Celeste Richards our acting secretary attended the Elective Congress of SASCOC and reported back on the election of the new president Mr. Gideon Sam and his new committee.  Jack Njoro attended the congress of Drug free sport and reported on the very informative and well presented meeting.  I attended the B group World Roller Hockey Championship in van der Bijl Park in and watched three games of the championship. This month we also had the first Coaches training program in Northern Gauteng.  The course was attended by participants from NG, North West and Kathorus.

In January we hosted a meeting for the African countries interested in starting a new African Confederation.  The very successful meeting was funded by the vice president of FIRS and we were honored that Mr. Carlos Orlando Ferreira at the meeting.  The meeting was attended by Cameroon, Egypt, Kenya, Mozambique, Roller Hockey SA and RSSA and Mr. Les Williams vice president of SASCOC welcomed everybody to the meeting.  I was appointed as chairperson of the committee to organize the next elective congress of the African Confederation in September in Johannesburg.  I  have been asked to stand in the election as President of the African confederation and I am considering the position.

In February I travelled to Rome for the Elective congress of FIRS.  Mr. Sabatino Aracu was re-elected as the President of FIRS and pledged his commitment to the development of the sport worldwide and the drive to get us in the Olympics. The IOC will vote in October to select from 6 sports, of which we are one, the new sport to be included in the Olympic Games.

In 6th and 7th of March we travelled to Graskop and Sabie for two open days one at the Sabie Primary school and one in Glory Hill.  We were absolutely over whelmed by the interest the children showed in the skating.  We could not keep up with the amount of kids who wanted to try, at the Sabie Primary school 450 kids attended.  In Glory Hill the kids had to line up to skate and it felt like we would never reach the end of the line. An hour before the advertised time kids started lining up with socks in hand, ready to skate.  Including the kids from the Orphanage made the day more special. On both days it was a full time job to switch skates to try and give everybody a chance.   We thank Madelein Prinsloo for her time and efforts to arrange the events and hope to have some equipment available soon to help them start the clubs.

Next it was off to Durban for the open day in Lamontville on the 28th of March.  We are very happy that Doris Mashishi could attend the event and I heard that she also had to help teach kids as there was also too many interested kids to handle.  Desiree Nel and the skaters who helped on the day were totally exhausted after the day of helping kids stay on the skates, but as always it was very satisfying to see the excitement and enjoyment.  Thanks to Andile Duku and Zandile Khawula for helping to organizing the event.

On the 28th March I attended the SASCOC Presidents meeting at the ICC in Durban and it is wonderful to see how much Mr. Gideon Sam and the new committee has done in their short time in office.  He is dedicated to the fast action, hard work and achievement of goals.

We hosted a series of training and grading courses in the months of March and April all financed by the NLDTF.  It was the first time we had adequate finance to travel to Eastern Cape and Western Cape and conduct the course for persons who cannot travel to the SA Championship. Thanks to Niki Stander and Patrick Furter for flying around to conduct the courses the courses.  A further thank you to Karel Avontuur and Desiree Nel for organizing the courses in Cape Town and Motherwell.

The annual South African Speed Skating Championship was a record breaking event.  Not only was it one of the biggest numbers of competitors ever in a championship but the skaters broke 34 records in the 3 days of competition.  Many longstanding records were broken and the record breakers were spread from the beginner sections all the way up to the Seniors.  We were happy to welcome competitors from the new clubs in Lamontville (KZN), Kathorus(CG) and Mfuleni(WC), many of the new skaters we very good and surprised us with their performances.

The championship was also the practical training part of the grading of new judges and many judges officiated for the first time at such a big event.  Duduzile Tshabalala received the Madeleine van Heerden memorial trophy for the best performance by a female skater; she broke 6 records in the 6 races she competed in.  I think this girl should be watched in the future.  The Willie van Heerden trophy for the administrator of the year went to Meriam Monama, the improvement and growth in her club is an example to us all.  Both Duduzile and Meriam are from the Dan House club and I want to congratulate the club on their amazing improvements in a very short time.

Nothing could wrap up the successful year in a better way than the news that our application for funds from the NLDTF was successful and we will receive funds to finance most of the projects we applied for.  The following projects were approved:
• Participation at World championship 2009
• Athletes assistance
• Elite Equipment
• SA Open championship with international participant
• Training and Grading of Judges
• Training and Grading of coaches
• Training of administrators
• Purchase of timing equipment
• New clubs

The website for Roller Sport South Africa is online www.rollersportsa.co.za  attracts a lot of visitors and many persons have contacted us with questions on clubs and competitions in South Africa.  I am sure this will be a very good way of marketing our sport and I urge everybody to contribute with news and information for the site. Jack Njoro is administrating the site for us and we thank him for his work.

The SA team trials are underway and from what we have seen we are looking forward to better results at the world championship in China.  I wish the team the best of luck.

We are looking forward to one of the busiest year we have ever had.  The commitment to all the projects funded by the NLDTF will take a lot of time and work and as volunteers we will have to do be very good with our time management.  All aspects of skating will be influenced and improved with the projects and I cannot wait to start.

Our biggest challenge and immediate threat to our growth and improvement is the lack of proper equipment for new clubs and an upgrade of equipment for the existing clubs.  We will have to find the finance to buy new skates very soon.

I again thank you all for your very hard work and assure you that your work is not going by unnoticed.  We are helping to shape the nation and we are building a healthy and sport loving generation and that should be our inspiration.

Thank you to Julius Zulu for organizing the Board Room for us and to the committee of Hammanskraal Roller Skating club for the refreshments.

My best wishes and thanks to you.
